How to Reduce Corrugated Carton Damage Claims in Export

Reduce export carton claims by treating the carton as one part of a tested shipping system: product restraint, board strength under humidity, pallet/load pattern, container blocking, and traceable inspection evidence. Increasing board GSM alone rarely fixes damage caused by poor pack-out or load movement.

Classify the failure first

Separate compression collapse, puncture, wet-softened board, seam opening, abrasion, and product movement. Photograph all panels, pallet position, container location, and labels before disposal. Different failure modes point to different owners: board supplier, converter, packer, warehouse, or freight handling.

Specify for the route

Build board and carton requirements around product mass, stack height, storage time, humidity, and handling frequency. Request ECT/FCT or box-compression data with stated conditioning. Ocean routes and transshipment can expose cartons to moisture and longer compression periods than domestic tests.

Engineer the pack-out

Use dividers, inserts, pads, or fitted die cuts to keep products from transferring impact into carton walls. Control gross weight and center of gravity. Empty headspace can turn a compliant carton into a damaged product claim; test the complete pack rather than an empty box.

Protect closures and edges

Set tape or adhesive pattern, flap overlap, and required fiber tear where relevant. Use edge boards, stretch wrap, or corner protection on palletized loads when compression and strap forces concentrate. Avoid over-tensioning strapping, which can cut or crush carton corners.

Load containers deliberately

Define pallet dimensions, stack pattern, maximum height, load gaps, and approved dunnage. Block and brace voids so pallets cannot walk during transit. Keep cartons off wet container floors where feasible and inspect the container for leaks, odor, protrusions, and moisture before loading.

Use evidence and corrective action

Retain board COAs, carton lot codes, pre-shipment photos, pack-test reports, and loading records. For a claim, compare failed cartons with retained samples and lane conditions. Correct one root cause at a time; do not change board, pack-out, and palletization together if you need attribution.
