How to Check Recyclable Packaging Claims from Suppliers
How packaging buyers should verify recyclable and recycled-content claims from China suppliers: definitions, evidence, design-for-recycling limits, and RFQ wording that reduces greenwashing risk.
Quick answer
Treat “recyclable” as a market-and-design claim, not a material slogan. Ask what is recyclable (mono-material PE, paper, glassine, etc.), where (which country/stream), and what evidence exists (specs, recycled %, certifications). PackTrades buyers should separate recycled content from end-of-life recyclability.
Three claims people mix up
1) Recycled content (PIR/PCR inside the material). 2) Recyclable in a named system (technically compatible with a stream). 3) Compostable/biodegradable (different standards entirely). A film can contain PCR and still be hard to recycle if multi-layer metallized structures are used.
Evidence checklist
Written structure breakdown by layer
Recycled percentage and PIR vs PCR
Test reports or declarations matching the legal entity
Ink/adhesive/coating notes that affect paper repulpability
Any third-party logos—with scope and expiry
Design choices that break recycling stories
Full plastic windows on paper boxes, heavy mixed laminations, non-repulpable coatings, PVC components, and dark carbon-black plastics that sorting systems miss. Soft-touch films and heavy foil looks may conflict with brand recycling pages—align marketing and BOM early.
Regional reality matters
A structure accepted in one EU program may not be collected in a US municipality or a Southeast Asian city. If you sell into multiple markets, write the claim for the strictest relevant market or use qualified language. Do not copy a supplier’s generic “100% recyclable” line onto your PDP without legal review.
RFQ wording that helps
Require suppliers to state structure, recycled %, and whether they warrant recyclability in a named market. Ban silent substitutions of film/paper grades. Ask for alternate greener structures with cost and barrier trade-offs instead of vague eco upgrades.
How this ties to China sourcing
Many China factories can run both conventional and reduced-plastic options. The constraint is usually your barrier/shelf-life need and price band. Use sampling to prove performance, then lock the claim package (spec + artwork icons) before mass production.
