How to Verify Flexible Packaging Suppliers in China
Practical checklist to verify China flexible packaging suppliers for pouches and film: capabilities, clean rooms, testing, export documents, sampling gates, and red flags buyers should catch early.
Quick answer
Verify flexible packaging suppliers by matching structure (PET/PE, PET/AL/PE, paper laminates, etc.) to real lines, reviewing retort/barrier claims with test data, and auditing sealing, printing, and hygiene controls. Factory photos alone do not prove pouch integrity for export food or cosmetics programs.
Map the structure before you shortlist
Stand-up pouches, flat pouches, spouted pouches, rollstock, and lids need different equipment. Write the laminate structure, thickness, barrier needs (OTR/WVTR if relevant), zipper/spout, and filling method. Suppliers strong in snack laminates may be weak in retort or high-alcohol wipes—capability is structure-specific.
Capability evidence to request
Extrusion/lamination/printing/pouch-making line list
Maximum/minimum web widths and pouch sizes
Ink systems (solvent/eco) and color management
Zipper/spout brands they routinely run
In-house tests: seal strength, burst, drop, COBB/barrier if claimed
Hygiene and compliance gates
For food, personal care, or medical-adjacent packs, ask about workshop zoning, pest control, residual solvent controls, and migration/food-contact documentation appropriate to your market. Certificates should match the legal entity on the quotation. Export experience to your region matters for labeling and testing norms.
Sampling path that catches seal failures
Structure/film sample → printed roll or pouch sample → filled packing trial on your filler when possible. Approve seal curves, zipper feel, tear notches, and aroma transfer. Retort or hot-fill claims need process trials—not brochure statements.
Commercial red flags
Quotes that omit structure details; “same as competitor” without drawings; refusal to state MOQ by size; subcontracting printing/lamination with no disclosure; and prices far below market without explaining film grade. Unclear ownership of cylinders/plates is a future lock-in risk.
On-site or remote audit focus
Watch lamination bond checks, solvent residual process if applicable, pouch seal stations, incoming film IQC, and finished goods packing. Ask how they handle customer complaints and retained samples. Remote video can work for first filters; critical food programs deserve deeper audits.
RFQ and trial order checklist
Structure drawing; barrier/performance targets; artwork rules; quantity ladder; tester protocols; AQL; Incoterms; lead time from cylinder approval; spare parts for spouts/zippers. Keep a signed spec sheet with the PO.
