Folding Carton and Carton Sealing Adhesives Buyer Guide

Quick answer

Specify the carton substrate, glue application system, line speed, open time, and required bond before comparing adhesive prices. A side-seam glue for coated folding cartons and a case-sealing hot melt can both be called carton adhesive, but they are not interchangeable.

Separate the application families

Folding-carton side seams commonly use cold water-based adhesives or hot melt, while corrugated case sealing may use hot melt, water-based adhesive, or pressure-sensitive tape systems. State whether the bond is board-to-board, coated board-to-board, or board-to-film; each surface changes wet-out and set behavior.

Match adhesive to substrate

Name the board grade, coating, varnish, lamination, and recycled content. UV varnish, PE film, heavy ink coverage, and low-energy films can defeat a glue that bonds plain uncoated board. Ask suppliers to identify any surface-treatment or window-glue limitations in writing.

Define line conditions

Share folder-gluer or case-sealer type, nozzle or wheel application, line speed, ambient temperature, and compression dwell. Open time must tolerate the longest practical blank path; set time must still support packing speed. Do not use a lab hand-bond result as a production-speed approval.

Control glue application

Record bead pattern, coat weight starting range, nozzle temperature for hot melts, and adhesive temperature/viscosity for cold glues. Excess adhesive can squeeze onto visible panels or soften board; too little gives intermittent edge lifting. Require the supplier to provide operating and cleaning guidance.

Test finished packs

Test side-seam fiber tear or specified peel strength after defined cure time, then repeat after humidity conditioning and shipment simulation where needed. For shipping cartons, include filled-carton compression, vibration, and temperature exposure. Inspect both clean board and worst-case printed/coated panels.

Plan storage and change control

Confirm shelf life, minimum storage temperature, freeze sensitivity, drum or pail size, and batch traceability. Hot melts need defined softening/application ranges; water-based grades may be damaged by freezing. Require prior notice for resin, solids, or formulation changes.
