How to source folding cartons and color boxes from China: board grades, print and finish, dielines, MOQ, sampling stages, and RFQ specs that keep converter quotes comparable.

What folding cartons cover
Retail color boxes, FMCG cartons, window cartons, pharmaceutical-style cartons, and many insert sleeves. They ship flat, run on folder-gluers, and carry high-quality graphics. Use corrugated outers when parcel shipping demands stacking strength the carton alone cannot provide. If the brief says “gift box” but the pack must ship flat and glue on a folder-gluer, you still want a folding carton—not a wrapped rigid box.
Board decisions buyers under-specify
Call out SBS, FBB, coated recycled board, or kraft—plus GSM/caliper (often 250–400 gsm for retail color boxes) and whether food-contact rules apply. Recycled content and whiteness affect print and claims. Do not approve a soft-touch luxury mockup on premium SBS then switch to a cheaper recycled grade without new proofs. Grain direction on long scores should be written on the dieline and PO; silent mill swaps are a top bulk risk.
Print and finishing controls
Offset is the workhorse for fine retail work; digital helps short runs; flexo appears on some volume lines. Define coatings (aqueous, UV, soft-touch), foil, emboss/deboss, and window film. Test score cracking on heavy films and dark solids. Approve color on the production board, not only on coated proofing stock if bulk board differs. Barcode grade should be signed on the printed blank, not assumed from the PDF.
Dieline and glue flap discipline
Provide a dieline with tolerances, grain notes if critical, and glue-flap keep-outs (no heavy varnish or foil on the glue window). Complex auto-bottom or crash-lock styles need machine trials. Window patches and inserts must be designed with the blank, not after. Glue-flap width and adhesive type belong in the spec so the converter does not guess on coated board.
Folder-gluer reality
A hand-folded sample does not prove the carton will run. Ask which styles the plant’s gluers actually run (straight-line vs crash-lock vs four/six-corner) and whether windowed or foil-heavy blanks have been glued at speed. Side-seam opens after high-speed gluing usually trace to coating on the flap, glue grade, or open time—not “bad boxes.”
Sampling stages
White/structural sample (fit and fold) → printed sample (color/finish) → pre-production when foil, windows, or special gluers are involved. Sign barcode scans, shade, fold action, and score appearance. Ban verbal size tweaks after approval. Keep a retained approved blank with the PO.
MOQ, tooling, and lead time
Dies and plates drive first-order cost. MOQs vary by print process and board. Separate tooling from unit price when comparing suppliers. Peak retail seasons fill capacity—freeze structure early. Color sign-off, not empty press time, is often the real lead-time gate.
Cost drivers buyers miss
Board grade and GSM usually outweigh ink cents. Window film, foil stations, extra glue-flap complexity, and inner fittings add more than a second spot color. Freight on bulky flat blanks still matters—ask packing method (bundles vs cartons) and whether outers are included.
Bulk quality checks
Outer dimensions and inner fit; score cracking under agreed light; color vs retained sample; barcode scan; glue-flap cleanliness; window adhesion and haze; warp after a humidity hold if the lane is ocean freight. Define AQL or photo limits on the first PO.
