Rigid Box Magnetic Closure Spec Checklist

Practical specification checklist for magnetic rigid-box closures: magnet layout, pull force, polarity, board and wrap interactions, testing, and RFQ controls for China gift-box suppliers.

Quick answer

Specify a magnetic rigid-box closure by defining magnet count, size class, exact placement from edges, polarity, board/wrap stack-up, and pass criteria for alignment and opening force. “Magnetic close” is a feature request, not a production specification.

Start with the user action

Decide whether the box should snap closed firmly, close softly for a premium feel, or remain secure through parcel transit. Product weight, cover size, and insert resistance affect this choice. Ask the converter to recommend a starting magnet configuration, then validate it on your loaded sample.

Location and polarity

Dimension magnet centers from stable finished-box references, such as the cover edges and spine, rather than artwork features. Require matching polarity across all boxes and define the mating pair orientation. A polarity error makes a closure repel or misalign; it is expensive to discover after wrap mounting.

Board, wrap, and gap

Magnet strength is affected by grey-board thickness, recess depth, wrap thickness, and any product or insert pressure that holds the cover open. Do not change board or paper after approving closure performance without a re-test. The visible cover must stay flat; telegraphing magnet outlines is a reject condition for many luxury programs.

Manufacturing controls

Ask how the supplier locates magnets, checks polarity, and prevents loose magnets before mounting. Adhesive cure, recess accuracy, and work instructions matter more than a nominal magnet grade alone. Require a defined action for boxes with weak closure or reversed magnets.

Test the real pack

Check closure alignment, repeated opening cycles, loaded drop/handling performance, and whether the lid opens after vibration or compression. Test at expected humidity if the pack crosses ocean lanes. Record a simple accept/reject method rather than relying on subjective “good feel.”
