Laminated Film Structures for Food Flexible Packaging
Buyer guide to laminated food-packaging film structures: barrier layers, sealants, process conditions, food-contact documentation, testing, and RFQ fields for China flexible-packaging suppliers.
Quick answer
Specify food flexible packaging by function—barrier, seal, stiffness, puncture resistance, print, and process temperature—then agree a layer structure. A generic request for “three-layer laminated film” does not tell a converter whether the pack will protect the food or run on your line.
Think in functional layers
The outside web carries print and surface finish; barrier layers protect aroma, oxygen, moisture, or light as required; the sealant layer must seal through your product and run on your equipment. PET, PE, PP, nylon, aluminum foil, metallized film, and coated films are tools, not automatic recipes.
Match structure to product and process
Dry snacks, oily foods, powders, frozen foods, hot-fill products, and retort applications create different requirements. Share product water activity where relevant, oil content, fill temperature, target shelf life, and distribution conditions. Do not accept a barrier claim without a stated test condition and method.
Seal performance
Define seal width, seal initiation range if needed, contamination tolerance, peel or weld behavior, and burst/leak acceptance criteria. Seal problems often come from poor film/process pairing rather than a visibly incorrect laminate. Trial on your actual filler with production-equivalent film.
Food-contact and migration
Request declarations and supporting documents for the destination market, including the final intended food contact and use conditions. Printing inks, adhesives, recycled content, and retort or microwave exposure can change the documentation needed. Treat documents as qualification inputs, not substitutes for pack testing.
Print and conversion
Specify print direction, repeat length, web width, unwind orientation, registration marks, and roll splice rules. Gravure, flexo, and digital options have different MOQ and color controls. Ask for a retained master standard and change notification for resin, adhesive, or ink systems.
