Quick answer

Buy food-grade paper cans by specifying the full composite: paper body, internal liner or barrier, end components, closure, product conditions, and destination-market food-contact requirements. A paper exterior does not establish food suitability or shelf-life performance.

Define the can construction

Paper cans may use spiral or convolute wound bodies with paper, foil, or film barrier layers and metal, plastic, or paper-based ends. State internal diameter, height, usable volume, wall construction, seam orientation, and whether the can is for dry food, powder, snacks, or another application.

Barrier and product compatibility

Moisture, oxygen, aroma, grease, and light requirements depend on the food and target shelf life. Identify the product, fat content, particle size, fill temperature, and storage environment. A liner that performs for dry tea may be unsuitable for oily powder or humid distribution.

Ends and opening features

Specify bottom and top end materials, peelable membrane or inner seal, overcap, tear strip, and tamper-evident presentation. Define opening force and reseal expectation. Run a consumer-use review because sharp edges, weak pull tabs, and loose caps create costly complaints.

Food-contact documentation

Request declarations and supporting documents applicable to the destination market and intended food/contact conditions. Include inks, adhesives, liners, and closures in the qualification scope. Documentation should match the actual sold construction; do not accept a certificate for an unrelated stock grade.

Testing and shelf-life

Use real filled-product trials to check seam integrity, odor transfer, compression, and barrier performance through the intended shelf life. Test after humidity and transport conditioning where relevant. Establish retained samples and lot traceability for commercial production.
