Quick answer

Specify a window carton as a combined board, die-cut, film, adhesive, and folding process. Lock the window size and position, film type/thickness, overlap, glue pattern, and inspection criteria before pricing; “clear window box” is not enough for comparable quotes.

Choose the window function

A window may show the product, create a handle or hang feature, or support tamper-evident presentation. Define what must remain protected from dust, scuffing, and product migration. Large windows can reduce panel stiffness, so evaluate the whole carton structure rather than the graphic layout alone.

Select the patch material

Common choices include PET, PP, acetate-style films, and specialty barrier or recycled-content films. State clarity, haze, thickness, scratch resistance, recyclability constraints, and food-contact needs if the film is near unpackaged product. Do not accept “PVC-free” as a complete material specification.

Control geometry and registration

Provide a dieline with cutout size, patch dimensions, overlap on all sides, and allowed registration tolerance to print and creases. Keep glue clear of visible areas and specify whether the film sits inside or outside the blank. Tight windows near scores need production trials to prevent lifting.

Specify adhesive and process

Patch adhesive must bond to the chosen film and board finish at the line speed used. Name hot melt or cold-glue system, adhesive placement, cure/set expectation, and allowable squeeze-out. Coatings, foil, and soft-touch finishes can require local uncoated glue zones.

Test folding and appearance

Inspect film wrinkles, trapped dust, haze, scratches, glue strings, and patch lift. Fold cartons through the finished folder-gluer path and check windows near creases for cracking or delamination. Approve a production-intent printed sample, not only a hand-applied mockup.

Plan packing and transit

Window film can scuff under bundle pressure. Define interleaving, carton packing orientation, and compression limits for flat blanks. If cartons ship pre-erected, verify whether window surfaces rub during nesting and transport.
