What Does Lug Count Mean on a Twist-off Cap?

Lug count is how many lugs on a twist-off cap engage the jar finish. Match it to the finish drawing or the cap will slip, leak, or fail to open.

Quick answer

Lug count is the number of formed lugs on the cap skirt. Those lugs grip the interrupted threads of a lug finish and the cap turns only a short distance to seal. A four-lug cap does not seal a six-lug finish, even when both are sold under the same nominal diameter.

How do the lugs engage the jar?

Each lug is a small inward form in the skirt. On the capper it rides onto a matching glass or metal lug and pulls the compound down onto the rim. The seal is that compound, not the paint and not the knurl. If the lug spacing does not match the finish, the cap cocks, slips, or climbs off during the turn.

How is a lug cap different from a screw cap?

A continuous-thread cap follows a helical thread through several turns. A twist-off lug cap is meant for a short turn, often on a steam or vacuum capper. Do not paste a CT cap specification onto a lug-cap RFQ. The diameter name, the lug count, and the capper chuck are a set.

Can you read lug count off the diameter?

No. Buyers most often have to choose between four lugs and six lugs, and both counts appear on commercial food-jar finishes. A 63 mm or 70 mm callout does not tell you which. Measure the production finish, or read the drawing. Rounding a skirt measurement to the nearest millimeter is how the wrong count gets ordered.

What fails when the lug count is wrong?

The usual field failures are slip on the capper, cocked caps, slow leaks after cooling, lost vacuum, and lids consumers cannot open. None of those are fixed by a new print plate. If the pack uses a safety button, button-up product is a vacuum failure to investigate. It is not proof that every twist-off cap has a button. On PackTrades, vacuum-button panels show on some beverage and health-supplement references only.

What should you send the cap plant?

Send evidence of the finish, not a photo of a closed jar.

Finish drawing or three production finishes; diameter name; lug count

Capper type and the torque or vacuum window the line already uses

Whether a safety button is required, and the accept/reject panel position

Seal test on that finish after the real thermal process, not on a similar stock jar
