Speed and open time
Hot-melts can set quickly for high-speed folder-gluers and case sealers. Water-based systems need enough open time and compression for the board and coat weight in use.
Bond appearance and fiber tear
Many carton buyers want fiber tear on paperboard seams. Validate both adhesives on coated and uncoated areas of the live blank, including soft-touch or UV regions that resist bonding.
Equipment and safety
Hot-melt needs melt tanks, temperature control, and burn/char management. Water-based needs clean tanks, microbial control where relevant, and drying or compression discipline.
Climate and claims
Humid plants can extend water-based drying needs; hot rooms can thin hot-melt behavior. Write food-adjacent or odor constraints into the RFQ before trials.
