What Is Pin Adhesion in Corrugated Board?

Quick answer
Pin adhesion measures how well the corrugating medium is bonded to the liner in corrugated board. Buyers use it as one indicator of glue-line quality, especially when delamination or humid-season failures appear. It is not a complete substitute for ECT, warp checks, or converting trials.
What it tells you
Low or uneven pin adhesion can signal starved glue, wrong gel behavior, poor flute formation, or process drift. It helps compare board lots when bond quality is in question.
What it does not tell you
A passing pin adhesion result does not guarantee box compression, printability, or score performance. Always read it with board construction, moisture, and the failed carton symptoms.
How buyers should request it
Ask which method or internal procedure the plant uses, on which flute/liner combination, and whether samples were conditioned. Require retained samples from the same lot as commercial board.
When it matters most
Humid seasons, recycled medium changes, glue reformulations, and new corrugator settings are typical triggers to add pin adhesion to incoming checks.
