What Does Adhesion to Steel Mean on Tape Spec Sheets?

Quick answer
Adhesion to steel is a lab peel value measured on a standard steel panel under controlled conditions. It helps compare tape lots and adhesive systems, but it does not by itself prove performance on dusty recycled carton board in a cold warehouse.
What it helps with
Screening suppliers, checking coat-weight consistency, and comparing acrylic vs hot-melt families when methods are stated.
What it does not guarantee
High steel adhesion can still fail on coated, dusty, or cold corrugated flaps. Board fiber tear, unwind force, and shear in the seal pattern also matter.
How to request it
Ask for the test method, units, dwell, peel angle/speed, and whether values are typical or minimums. Prefer COAs tied to shipped lots for critical pack programs.
When to emphasize board trials
Always confirm with adhesion or lift checks on your production cartons and equipment. Use steel numbers as one scorecard row, not the only gate.
