Choose wet-pressed pulp when paper-based positioning, nesting, and moderate cushioning matter. Choose thermoformed PET when clarity, washability, tight cavity detail, or moisture-insensitive trays are the priority. Compare full pack performance, not tray photos alone.
Protection and fit
Pulp trays cushion through geometry and fiber compliance. PET trays hold precise cavities and can show the product. Sharp or heavy products may need pulp stand-offs, liners, or a PET design with stronger ribs.
Moisture and climate
Pulp strength and dimensions move with humidity; PET is far more stable in wet routes. If ocean transit or cold-chain condensation is likely, validate pulp with conditioned samples or protect it inside sealed secondary packs.
Branding and appearance
PET supports high clarity and retail display. Wet-pressed pulp supports natural or custom-color paper looks and can carry embossed logos within tooling limits. Soft-touch cosmetics may need liners on either format to prevent scuff.
Sustainability claims
Pulp can support paper-recycling narratives when fiber and additives allow it. PET may be preferred where local PET recycling is stronger or reuse/wash cycles exist. Write claim language only after market rules are checked.
Commercial factors
Both need tooling. Pulp cycle time and drying capacity often set MOQ; PET sheet grade and cavity complexity drive cost. Quote empties freight and pack-out labor, not only tray unit price.
