Medium Paper Quality Issues Buyers Should Catch Early

Quick answer

Catch medium-paper problems before the corrugator runs by checking grade consistency, GSM, moisture, ring-crush behavior, reel build, splices, and storage history. A low-priced medium that flutes poorly or varies by reel will cost more in warp, waste, and weak cartons than it saves on paper.

Confirm the grade identity

Do not accept “corrugating medium” as a complete grade. Define recycled or virgin content where relevant, target GSM, strength target, color, and intended flute. Ask whether the sample and bulk are made on the same paper machine and whether alternate mills are allowed.

Measure GSM variation

Average basis weight hides localized light spots and reel-to-reel variation. Agree an acceptable range and sampling method across the reel width and along the reel. Low-GSM zones can reduce flute formation and board compression even when the delivery average appears compliant.

Watch moisture and curl

Excessive or uneven moisture changes web tension, starch pickup, flute formation, and board warp. Request delivery moisture limits and condition reels before testing. Note warehouse humidity and whether reels were exposed to rain, condensation, or long port storage.

Check strength in the right direction

Medium needs adequate performance for the intended flute and finished-board target. Ask for the relevant strength data, test method, and orientation rather than relying on a generic “high strength” description. Validate in converted board, because paper behavior and glue penetration interact.

Inspect reel quality

Look for telescoping, soft edges, crushed cores, uneven winding, web breaks, wrinkles, holes, and excessive splice frequency. Record core ID, reel width, diameter, and maximum reel mass against your unwinder capacity. Packaging damage can make an otherwise compliant paper unusable.

Control splices and contamination

Frequent or poorly marked splices disrupt high-speed corrugators and can create weak board sections. Specify splice marking and permitted splice frequency. Also inspect for sticky deposits, debris, coating contamination, or odor that could foul corrugator rolls or affect food-adjacent packaging.
